Mixtures & Murder
The Mixtures & Murder! activity was developed to facilitate genetic and forensic science education at the 6th grade level. Presented in a hands-on investigative style, students find our
Mixtures & Murder! unit engaging. The presentation has been developed using an inquiry-based model that allows students to personally connect with the subject matter as they expand their prior content knowledge.

In an effort to teach to multiple intelligences, we have also incorporated expanded Language Arts, Visual Arts, and Technology activities that can either be taught in conjunction with the science portion or can be explored on their own.

This unit is based on evidence recovered at a mock crime scene. Students receive a packet of information, prior to their visit, containing evidence recovered from the scene. As part of their visit to the DNA EpiCenter, students have the opportunity to visit the mock “crime scene” and perform gel electrophoresis in one of our two laboratories.
