School Groups: Curriculum
This unit utilizes evidence recovered at a mock crime scene. Students receive a packet of information prior to their visit containing the evidence recovered from the scene. While visiting the DNA EpiCenter, students have the opportunity to see the mock crime scene. This unit of study was primarily developed to allow students to expand upon their knowledge of genetics and heredity.

This unit has been organized into three parts: pre-visit activities, a laboratory investigation and postvisit activities. During the pre-visit activities, students visit learning stations and acquire clues about a mystery disease (sickle cell anemia). Each station challenges the students to explore different aspects of the mystery disease. Working in groups, students manipulate models and gather data to construct an
explanation of how the mystery disease affects the patient at the molecular level.
